thrice-crowned queen of night: i.e., the goddess associated with the moon in classical mythology. —In the heavens she is Cynthia; on earth, Diana; and in the underworld, Proserpina. Hence she is "thrice-crowned." She is also the protecter of chastity, and so Orlando's appeal to her emphasizes the purity of his love for Rosalind.
